NETWORK SERVICES
This page will list some of the services running on our servers, and provide some information relative to applying them on your website. Should you require additional information, I would recommend searching the Internet, or signing up for one of our forums, and ask someone for the information that you seek. You may be surprised on what you can find. Further, we also would like to suggest you check out our extensive FTP file system for code samples, snippets, editors, and more, while you can check out our Software Development section for manuals, guides and tutorials.
.NET SERVICES
Pronounced as "dot net". This is a service running on a network server that supports "dot net" services, through an application server such as Apache® and Microsoft's 'IIS® 6.0'. 'Dot Net' applications are created with a variety of tools, such as Microsoft's 'Visual Studio .NET® 2003 and so on. Dot NET services is an easier way to create secure and robust web and Windows applications. Enterprise editions are available for enterprise-wide development, and for creation of Windows services. Search for Microsoft .NET Services using any popular search engine, or access Microsoft's website.
CERTIFICATE SERVICES
This is also a service that only runs on a Active Directory primary domain server. This service does what it says. It allows users of a network to request and receive certificate files for a variety of reasons, from user authentication, email security, secure communications and encryption, and so on. The mechanism is as follows; a user runs a wizard on his/her computer, requesting a certificate, and selecting user identification, secure email, and so on. The request is then sent to the domain controller running the service on it. The service reads the request and generates a certificate and the public and private keys. The certificate is then sent to your browser by the server, where it is installed on his/her computer.
CRYPTOGRAPHIC SERVICES
This is another service. This service allows the server to generate and maintain security and encryption keys, and to apply the security policy set up on all networks. This service is required for encrypted file systems, or any encrypted network services.
DHCP SERVER
This is a service that provides users logging on with an IP address within the network's allowed IP address pool. The address pools are configured, and exceptions made by the system administrator. The workstations and computers on a network are accessed accross a network by its unique Internet Protocol address. There are two addressing schemes, IPV4 which uses notation like this: 000.000.000.000 - 255.255.255.255, and IPV6 which uses a completely different scheme like this: 2002::d1fa::17ef::d1fa:17ee. The IPV6 protocol addresses literally quadrillions of unique IP addresses, whereas IPV4 only a couple of hundred million. What a big difference in the number of bits in the address. IPV4 is a 32-bit addressing scheme, and IPV6 is a 512-bit addressing scheme.
DNS SERVER
DNS is an acronym for 'domain name services'. Domain name services is a basic database manager, actually. It runs on a server on a network, and provides network mapping of domain names to an IP address. In order to find more information about this, click here.
FAX SERVICES
This service runs on any computer or server on a network that has a fax-capable modem installed and a dedicated telephone line, with basic telephone services (a dial tone). The number can be local, long distance or toll-free.
FTP SERVICES
FTP is an acronym for 'File Transfer Protocol'. This is a service that typically runs on a network server, however there are smaller editions available that will run on user's computers. These servers are difficult to access and maintain unless the computer the service is running on has been issued a static IP address. If the "server's" IP address does not remain the same (static), then the server disappears off the internet map when it's address changes. Any DNS records would have to be updated, just to be changed again later on. This service allows users to transfer allowed files from the server's hard disk to yours.
IIS SERVICE
IIS is a Microsoft trademark. It is also an acronym for Internet Information Server. This runs as a service on a web server. IIS is also known as an 'application server'. An application server delivers a website's contents to your browser over your internet connection and through the internet.
POP3 SERVICE
POP 3 is an internet protocol, like ssl, http and ftp. POP is another acronym, meaning Post Office Protocol. The three (3) denotes version 3. The post office protocol is a service that runs on a network's mail server. The pop protocol is a service that allows its authorized users to receive their email from their mail server. The SMTP server delivers mail to another SMTP server on another network. The database created by the SMTP server is accessed by the POP protocol to send the mail from the server to your mail client program.
MICROSOFT SEARCH SERVICE
This is a service that typically runs on a web server, or a database server. Search service allows a user to search a database or web site for data based on a bunch of key words. A web search utility creates a database table on the fly, and stores the link to the web page containing the matching key word or words, depending upon the logic of the search query.
MSSQL SERVICE
This is a service that runs on a server. This is a database server. This particular service is Microsoft's SQL Server 2000.
SMTP SERVER
This is a service that runs on a mail server. SMTP is an acronym meaning; 'Simple Mail Transfer Services'. This a service that delivers and accepts delivery of internet email. This email is then accessed by a POP server.
SSL SERVICE
This is an acronym for Secure Sockets Layer. SSL is an encryption scheme for data transmission of web pages over the internet. This allows for secure transactions to occur between a server and an internet user. Only the holder of the public and private keys may view the transaction. SSL is used for web pages, email services, FTP services and certificate requests.
TELNET SERVICES
This is a service that runs on a server or any other computer. When this service is running on a computer or server, it allows a user to log onto the computer or server using a text based window. This is a DOS shell on a Windows-based computer, or a bash or other type of shell on a Unix-type box.
WINDOWS MEDIA SERVICES
This service allows a web server to offer streaming media services. When this service is running on a web server, a video file can be converted to a different compression algorythm and served in real-time over the internet. Look at other pages on this web server for a demonstration of Windows Streaming Media Services.
